This is mainly because Everclear is available at 190 proof.

The Center for Disease Contril (CDC) is clear that a hand sanitizer needs to be alcohol-based, and that it must have a concentraion over 60% per volume, to be most effective. 75% is even better.

The CDC further says that, in the healthcare industry, alcohol can be used to refer to two different chemical compounds:

Ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) and isopropyl alcohol (or rubbing alcohol).

In general, the ethanol or ethyl alcohol in spirits such as vodka and grain alcohol,is an effective antiseptic when it is 180 proof or higher. And, when it is mixed with water and an evaporative substance such a pure glycerin.

To calculate the percentage of alcohol per bottle of grain alcohol, you would divide the proof of of the liquor in half. At 190 proof, the alcohol base for a homemade mixture of hand sanitizer comes to 95% alcohol.

Using Everclear grain alcohol, the World Health Organization formula,  to make one quart of homemade hand sanitizer at CDC 75% alcohol concentration, would be:

- 3 and 1/4 cups of Everclear.

- 3 Tablespoons of 3% hydrogen peroxide.

- 1 Tablespoon of glycerin.

Plus enough water to water to make a total of 4 cups, or 1 quart.

See our previous video on the WHO DIY hand sanitizer for full instructions.

Everclear is bottled at 120, 151, 189, and 190 U.S. proof so be sure you are getting 190 proof, when you purchase.

Everclear is produced by the American company Luxco. Luxco also manufactures two other brands, Golden Grain alcohol and Crystal Clear alcohol, as essentially the same spirit with a different brand name.

In the event that Everclear sells out, there is also Devil’s Creek Vodka at 151 & 160 proof- but you will have to adjust the home made recipe accordingly.

You can order these alcohols online. Do a search and there are many distributors that will ship to your doorstep.
